Seamwork Radio's Best Podcast Interviews

Meet inspiring makers who break the rules and share their lessons for living a creative life.

Posted in: Seamwork Radio Podcast • December 9, 2024 • Episode 221

The Seamwork Radio Podcast is taking a break for the holidays, so Haley and I picked some of our favorite podcasts to re-air for you.

The first re-air is an interview I did in 2020 with Ashley, a creative maker who used sewing to help heal. As Ashely was growing up, her innocence and relationship with her mom eroded. But somehow, sewing provided that thin thread of connection that never went away.

Here are some of my favorite interviews from more than 200 episodes of the podcast.

  • A Radical Change in Confidence With Jenny Rushmore: Our first ever episode of the Seamwork Radio podcast aired in September, 2015 with Jenny Rushmore, founder of Cashmerette and the Curvy Sewing Collective. In this episode, she shared how she overcame childhood bullying to find a radical change in confidence.

  • The Proud Sewist with Matthew Holloway: Growing up in Oklahoma, Matthew always had the sense that he wasn't "normal." He began to ask questions. What's wrong with being interested in "feminine" things?

  • A Dream of Self-Sufficiency with Morgan Meredith. Morgan Meredith is the designer and creator of Thread Theory, a menswear sewing pattern line. From the time she was little, Morgan knew she wanted a life that she could control. But when her husband decided to join the military, she thought those dreams might be shattered.

  • Design, Fame, and Villainy with Gretchen Jones: Cast as a villain on Project Runway season 8, Gretchen Jones talks about life and design after her experience after her controversial win.

  • Beating the Odds with Melissa Fehr: In 2008, Melissa was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. This life-changing experience eventually led her to designing patterns.

  • Open Up with Jennifer Wiese: Jennifer tells the story of putting on a major sewing event—Camp Workroom Social—and the unexpected benefits of being open to mistakes.

  • A Shift in Mindset with Jacqui Palhegyi: The blogger behind Birds of a Thread has always been passionate about issues of social justice. On a trip to Egypt, an encounter forever shifted what she knew about clothing.

  • Let's talk money with Heather Lewenza: The designer and founder of Closet Core and Crew Patterns talks about how money and spending have shaped her values and led her to a career in sewing.

  • Loving a person, not their gender with Marie Koupparis: In 2015 Marie of the blog A Stitching Odyssey wrote a post called "Loving a Person, Not Their Gender" about the experience of her partner coming out as transgender.

  • Sewing a Legacy, the Story of Folkwear: In this episode, Haley sat down with the founders of Folkwear patterns, a company that’s been creating patterns for more than 50 years.

  • 5 Tips for Making Your Own Patterns, With Cornelius Quiring: Cornelius Quiring is one of the most creative and helpful sewing content creators on social media right now. What started as a personal journey to create adaptive clothing for his body has grown into a creative outpouring of educational content about garment construction, fabric, sewing tools, and patternmaking skills.

  • 10 Tips for Upcycling Your Clothes With April From Coolirpa: April Yang has been thrift flipping since high school. And while that might not be uncommon, over the last 12 years, she has inspired over 2 million followers on her YouTube channel, Coolirpa. If you want thrift flipping advice, just ask April!

  • Sewing For Kids: 10 Tips From Tilly and the Buttons: Thinking about sewing for some of the little ones in your life? We always get questions about sewing for kiddos, so today, I brought a special guest on the podcast who knows all about sewing for kids and tweens. It's Tilly from Tilly and the Buttons!

  • You loved my 2-part interview with our patternmaker, Robin. In the first part, she explains how a Seamwork pattern is made, and in the second part, she busts a bunch of common patternmaking myths.
