Semi-minimalist Sewing

Episode 57: In practice, minimalism can feel restrictive and even joyless, especially for a creator. So is there a middle path with minimalism? Can you be a semi-minimalist?

Posted in: Seamwork Radio Podcast • September 14, 2021 • Episode 57

I've often wished I were a minimalist. I'm not.

Many of the values of minimalism resonate with me, and I'm sure with many of you too. The core tenet of the minimalist lifestyle is to have only things in your life that are truly valuable to you. Makes sense.

But in practice, minimalism can feel restrictive and even joyless, especially for a creator. We like to make things simply for the experience and joy of creating. Yes, those things can certainly have utility in our lives, but for many of us there are other criteria beyond utility.

So is there a middle path with minimalism? Can you be a semi-minimalist? That's what we explore in this week's episode of Seamwork Radio. Haley and I talk about:

* Which ideas from the minimalist movement resonate with us.
* How the aesthetic of minimalism often gets confused with the ideas behind it.
* How we think about our stuff, our money, and our time.
* How you can adapt semi-minimalist practices into your sewing.
